The Most Important Rule: Manage Humidity
Singapore's year-round humidity (70β90% relative humidity) is the single biggest threat to your piano's condition and tuning stability. Every other care tip is secondary to getting humidity management right.
The goal is to maintain a stable humidity environment of 50β65% relative humidity around your piano. Pianos don't mind being in a humid environment nearly as much as they mind rapid humidity swings β the constant expansion and contraction is what causes damage over time.
Piano Placement
- Against an interior wall β exterior walls are exposed to direct sunlight and heat, which creates humidity gradients
- Away from windows β direct sunlight fades and dries out finishes and wooden components
- Away from air-conditioning vents β cold air blowing directly onto the piano causes rapid humidity changes
- Away from doors β exterior doors let in warm, humid air that rapidly changes the piano's environment
- Not in the kitchen β cooking steam, heat and grease damage all piano components
Humidity Control Options
- Room air conditioning β maintains temperature and reduces humidity, but creates rapid swings when switched off
- Dampp-Chaser Piano Life Saver β a humidity control system installed inside the piano cabinet. Maintains stable 45β50% relative humidity inside the instrument regardless of room conditions. The most effective protection for Singapore pianos. We supply and install these systems β ask us for a quote
- Room humidifier/dehumidifier β useful supplement to air conditioning, but less targeted than a piano-specific system
Cleaning
Key Tops
Wipe white (ivory or plastic) key tops with a barely-damp soft white cotton cloth, wiping from back to front to prevent moisture entering the gap between key and fall. Use a separate cloth for black keys. Never use household cleaning sprays, bleach, or alcohol on key tops β these damage both ivory and plastic surfaces.
Cabinet Exterior
For gloss (polyester) finishes: use a soft microfibre cloth dry, or barely damp. For satin or matte finishes: use a dry cloth only. Never use furniture polish, silicone sprays, or products with wax on piano finishes β they build up over time and are difficult to remove.
Interior
Do not attempt to clean the interior of your piano yourself. Professional piano cleaning every 2β3 years removes accumulated dust and debris safely.
Tuning Schedule
Schedule piano tuning with Singapore Piano Shop twice a year β in MarchβApril and SeptemberβOctober. These periods align with Singapore's inter-monsoon seasons when soundboard humidity is closest to equilibrium, giving the best chance of the tuning lasting well through the following monsoon period.
What to Avoid
- Objects on top of the piano β spills cause catastrophic internal damage
- Direct sunlight β fades finish and dries out wood
- Keeping the fallboard closed during prolonged humid weather β traps moisture on the keys
- Candles or incense near the piano β wax deposits damage finishes
- DIY cleaning of strings, hammers, or action β easily causes damage
